Abstract
BACKGROUND: Korea signed the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in 2000 and on the following year, enacted the implementing legislation, the Act on Transboundary Movements of Living Modified Organisms and other Related Matters. The Biosafety Program should be established to protect individuals from exposure to biohazards through the application of administrative and engineering controls in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

METHODOLOGY: Biosafety is the prevention of large-scale loss of biological integrity, focusing both on ecology and human health. These prevention mechanisms include conduct of regular biosafety reviews in laboratory settings, as well as implementation of strict guidelines. The Institutional Biosafety Committee creates and monitors the biosafety standards that must be met by labs in order to prevent the accidental release of potentially destructive biological material. The Biosafety Program ensures a safe working environment for the Biosafety Laboratory; it was established to protect individuals from exposure to biohazards through the application of administrative and engineering controls.

RESULTS: The prototype of Biosafety Program is a helpful reference and guide to laboratories and research centers. The program was developed and established to ensure proper conduct of microbiological and toxic materials research.
